Emma Fijma (1998) is a multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer working across research, text, sculpture, video, illustration and graphic design. She graduated from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and now works between Utrecht and Berlin. Her practice explores how humans gather, communicate, organise and relate to the environments around them. She is interested in collective rituals, public space, non-human perspectives and the strange systems that shape everyday life, and in how design can help turn our odd environment into a better place.

She is drawn to things that are messy, alive, fragile, excessive or difficult to control. Mould, grass, glass, plaster, 3D scans, cyanotype, print and found materials become collaborators rather than just materials. Growth, decay, transformation, collective memory and the strange ways things hold together are recurring points of departure.

There is already waaaay too much enough advertising, content and polished “nothingness” in the world. Instead of adding to the noise, Emma wants to make things that ask something of us: to look differently, get involved, get uncomfortable, laugh, participate or simply notice what is usually overlooked.

A club poster and a gallery installation can come from the same place: putting colour, stories and ideas into the world, while creating space for people to meet and see things differently.
